Wrapped Ether (WETH) is a tokenized version of Ether (ETH) designed to operate as an ERC‑20 compliant token on the Ethereum blockchain. While ETH itself is the native cryptocurrency of Ethereum, it does not natively conform to the ERC‑20 standard used by most Ethereum-based tokens. WETH solves this by allowing ETH to be wrapped into an ERC‑20 compatible format, making it interoperable with decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and smart contracts.
